Late yesterday, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) was informed by PowerSchool of a cybersecurity issue involving its PowerSource portal. During discussions with PowerSchool’s senior leadership, it was confirmed that some personally identifiable information (PII) was accessed without authorization. This incident affected customer data from PowerSchool’s Student Information Systems (SIS), including data from school districts across South Carolina and other states. PowerSchool has assured SCDE and its customers that the breach has been contained and measures have been taken to secure their systems. While this situation is being treated with the utmost importance, both PowerSchool and SCDE are actively working together to understand the full scope of the incident and its impact. Abbeville County School District is collaborating closely with SCDE, PowerSchool, and other relevant parties to assess any potential effects on our district. PowerSchool has taken significant steps, including engaging cybersecurity experts and working with law enforcement, to address the issue and enhance the security of its systems. The SCDE is maintaining open communication with PowerSchool and local districts, including Abbeville County School District, to ensure a clear understanding of the situation. If any individuals are identified as being impacted, they will be contacted directly by PowerSchool in coordination with SCDE. Protecting the privacy and security of our students, staff, and families is a top priority for Abbeville County School District. While the investigation continues, we remain committed to providing updates and working diligently to resolve the matter.
